Golf Carts and Off-Highway Vehicles
On July 20, 2020, the Village Board of Trustees adopted an ordinance approving Chapter 73 Golf Carts and Off-Highway Vehicles. The complete ordinance regulating golf carts and off-highway vehicles can be found HERE.
The minimum age allowed to operate a golf cart or off-highway vehicle on Village streets is 18 years old.
Before operating a golf cart or off-highway vehicle on any Village street, it must be permitted and registered with the Mt. Zion Police Department located at 400 W. Main Street, Mt. Zion, IL 62549. Applications can be found below. Inspections can be scheduled by calling the Mt. Zion Police Departmemt at (217) 864-4012.
Once registered and inspected by the Mt. Zion Police Department and found to be in compliance with the proper safety equipment, proof of liability insurance, and payment of the $100.00 annual fee has been submitted, a permit and sticker will be issued to the applicant for use on Village streets. The permit only allows the vehicle to be driven on Village of Mt. Zion streets with a speed limit of 35 mph or less. Therefore, golf carts and off-highway vehicles are NOT allowed to be driven on Baltimore Avenue, Harry Land Road, Traughber Road, or State Highway 121.
The permit must be renewed every year on or before April 1st. Vehicles are required to be inspected every other year.
Operating a golf cart or off-highway vehicle on Village streets is a privilege and not a right. Village officials request that vehicles be operated in a safe manner at all times.
Vehicles found to be operated by underage drivers or without a permit, are subject to a fine of $150.00 for the first offense. See Section 73.07 Penalties of the ordinance for a full list of penalties and fines.
